As seo experts for decades, whenever we have a new client onboard, we get asked a question: “How long will it take to get ranked in the USA or Canada?. There is no definitive plan to get cited, but there are practical steps that you can take. Firstly, you need to take care of technical seo and make sure that crawlers have the pathway to access your page. Then create content that directly answers users’ queries and is extremely value-driven. The content should be made in such a way that it earns backlinks so that there is no backlink chasing. This comprehensive guide would explain the steps on how you get cited and include studies supported by third-party research

How does Google decide geo-targeting

Google does not have one specific rule for geo-targeting, as it uses multiple signals to do so. When you read Google’s own documentation, you will get to see a clear picture. The signals include URL structure, domain extension, hreflag tags, and localized content. For instance, if you are in India and publish content mostly in US English and have no specific pages that would target Indian audiences, then Google might see that India is not your targeted market.

This is why consistency has always been the key: the technical setup, the external linking, and content language should all come together and suggest what your intended market is. No single method can guarantee top rankings, but aligning these signals would definitely help Google understand your targeted audience.

Step 1: Choosing the right URL structure

The right URL is very important for international seo as it shows which country you are targeting. There are three main options here, and they are stated as a country-specific domain, a subdomain, and a subdirectory.

Country-specific domain: The extension that is used shows a particular country. For example, if you have a website called fashion.de, then that means the target country is Germany, and similarly, if you have fashion.in, then the target indian customers. This allows businesses to arrange their business in specific countries, and users may not immediately understand the crux of the issue.

Subdomain: This is a domain that helps you organise pages without purchasing a separate domain. For instance, there is a domain called fashion.com, and they want to operate in the USA and Canada, so their service pages should look like US.fashion.com and ca.fashion.com. This is a practical starting point for businesses operating in international markets.

Subdirectory: offers the same benefits as a subdomain, and companies use it to maintain category pages; companies can manage different countries under the same website.

Quick tip: Check how they operate; though they have similar functionalities, they have different identifiers. In case of a subdomain, they operate as US.fashion.com and can.fashion.com. In case of a subdirectory, the prefix of the country appears towards the back, and they are fashion.com/US and fashion.com/can

Step 2: Hreflang tags are your key

These are tags that help you identify your key. They help the website understand the language and which audience it is intended for. They are helpful to countries that speak the same language but have a different pricing structure.

To demonstrate, let’s say that your website is in two countries, the USA and Canada, and has subdirectories such as fashion.com/us and fashion.com/uk, so one serves an American audience and the other serves a Canadian audience.  Note that they are both English-speaking countries, but they have different pricing structures, audience psychology, and shipping options. When you add tags hreflag language code as en-US and en-GB, then Google can understand the intent of each page

Two things are worth mentioning here, you can add hreflag code, which is en-gb, but please note they cannot target a union or continent. To cite an example,  if you use code for Germany, it can add code as de-ge, but that will not target the entire EU. Furthermore, hreflag annotations can be added in the HTML head and XML sitemap. In addition, you can add an HTTP header, depending on the setup you have. Please note that if your website serves one language and is intended for one audience, then the Hreflang tag might not be necessary.

Step 3:  Country setting in Search Console should be ignored

Imagine that you operate a website known as fashion.com, and some old seo practitioner might tell you to go to Google Console, select the country, and you are set. This would not work in 2026, as the report is outdated.  Instead, what you need to do in 2026 is make sure that your website has the tonality and structure that speaks to the audience that you want to target.  For example, you create a subdirectory known as fashion.com/us and then target US-language products and customers. Moral of the story: don’t rely on outdated Search Console lists.

Step 4: localisation is not the same as translation

Let’s say that you run a car company service that operates in Canada. Now, if you write in US English and translate all the services that you provide in Canada into US English, that would be a problem for Google to understand. You need to replace all the local Canadian services and replace them with Canadian dollars so that it makes sense to the Canadian audience. Similarly, if you are selling in Spain and Germany, you need to adjust your language, pricing structure, and services so that they make sense to the audience you are targeting. Localization would help Google to understand your page better, and that is not the same as translation.

Step 5: Country-relevant backlinks can be a game changer

So if you are writing to a Canadian audience and your backlinks come from Australia or India, that would be very useful to you, since you will not be able to make industry-based connections. Please note that backlinks from other countries might not be harmful, but they are not very useful to you.

Now there is an easy way where you could build country-relevant backlinks, and it can be done by getting published in respected publications, getting listed in directories, creating useful content on social media, getting on podcasts, and developing good relationships with suppliers and distributors.

So backlinks from relevant websites can be your key. If you are writing for a US fashion website, getting a link from relevant US fashion websites should be your key. Please note that relevance would matter more than backlink count. A few backlinks from relevant websites would be a game changer rather than thousands of backlinks from irrelevant websites.

Step 6: Don’t stress about hosting

Early seo practitioner considered hosting a very important part if they wanted to target a particular country.  Now server location is not needed for ranking. Google documentation tells us that server location is irrelevant if the brand already has a subdirectory or subdomain where there is a clear indication of the people they are going to serve. To illustrate, let’s say that you have money.com; now money.com/us and money.com.uk directly show Google that one is serving the US and the other is serving the UK.

Mistakes to avoid

Don’t send wrong signals: if your website is operating in the US, write to the US audience and their problems. If you write in indian english and target customers from India, then it can send mixed signals to Google.

Don’t direct visitors based on location only: let’s say that your website is German and you use a subdirectory like brand.com/ de; this might not be helpful to the user who wants to view the English version of the website. So offer the user a language selector, since that would be a better approach than forcing users solely based on geolocation.

Third, don’t think that every community behaves the same. For instance, Spanish-speaking users in the US may search differently than Spanish-speaking users in Spain. So publishing a Spanish-speaking page would not mean that all Spanish-speaking people would behave the same.

Make sure that when you are creating multiple location pages, make sure you don’t duplicate every detail that you have written previously. For instance, if you have created pages for the US and the UK and follow the same content structure and psychology for other areas like France and Spain, then that would not work, as each country has a specific set of needs, pricing, and services. The goal is to create pages with a clear purpose without duplicating content without any value.

Bottom line

Ranking in a specific country has an easy learning curve and can be done with ease if the methods suggested here are followed. You first need to start with the right URL structure so that Google can understand the audience psychology and your customers. Offer multilingual support since not all people in the same area speak the same language. A Spanish individual might be comfortable viewing your page in English. Avoid any kind of old seo tactics, like setting up geolocation in Search Console and earning backlinks relevant to the niche and audience.
