LLMs have already reshaped how people discover content today. Earlier, the holy grail was backlinks, and now it’s brand mentions, relevance, structure, value proposition, and backlinks. What used to be a one-sided metric has been changed into several signals to find and discover content. At Faslinky, we audited 20 domains in September across various industries, and the results surprised us. The collective traffic from all these sites was around 3 million, and 8,000 was direct from ChatGPT. In our audit, we found out that capsules, minimal linking, and original data were the strongest signals in AI citations.

Capsules

Before we deep-dive into the topic, we would like to enlighten you about “ capsules”: since this is a term that many SEO people are unaware of, and we would like to enlighten them. These are 20- 25-word answers that immediately come after the H2 heading. Please note that this is not the same as a meta description; they are completely different. The purpose of the capsule is to provide a direct answer to the question, and the meta description is a summary that is encouraged for getting clicks.

For instance, if you are writing on a topic known as toxic backlink checker, you can write a 20-25 word answer explaining the heading. Please note that 120-150 is not a universal rule provided by Google; it’s just a format that is accepted by everybody.

Original data

Original data can be divided into two types: one that is provided by you and the other that you derive from the data of others.  For instance, if you are writing on “ best backlink checkers in 2026,” then if we write something as “ we have tried and tested these 15 tools from the internet, and we can safely say that these 7 emerge as winners,” This is known as complete original data since you have tested it out. Now, if you are sourcing someone’s data, then that’s a copywriting source; that would still be counted as data but not original data.

Minimal linking

This is the process, though AI citation can understand your page. Let’s say that you have written an article on best SEO tools in 2026, one where you have provided a link to your own website on the related topic and another where you have provided a link to an external source where you have derived information and/or made the reader understand the topic better; this is the correct way to do it, but if you do link manipulation, like sending a user to a different page that is unrelated, then that can be an issue, since Google and AI would consider it link manipulation.

So the best way to do it is to do a capsule answer after you have provided the H2 and then do linking in the content. This is not the same as providing an FAQ; answer capsules come in H2 headings only, and an FAQ is a section that contains answers and questions in a direct manner.

How to get cited by ChatGPT: Step-by-step process

Follow the step-by-step routine that would be discussed in this digital copy; as it worked for me, it should also work for you

Step 1: Allow OAI-Search bot

When you allow the OAI search bot to get access to the robots.txt file, then you are providing a pathway for AI crawlers to access your website. Now, AI uses different chat models to crawl.  They are known as OAIbot and GPTbot. These two bots have different uses.

OAI helps to discover website content, and GPTbot uses the content to train the AI models.  Now you will have the option to do two things here: allow all the bots to access your website, or you can limit the training model.

You can easily set up an OpenAI chatbot while limiting search bots in CDN settings. This does not guarantee that you will appear in AI citations; it simply means that you will be discoverable by AI search engines.

To allow OAI to use your entire website, you can use this syntax

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
Now, if you use the syntax
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

You are telling the crawlers not to access your website.

Step 2: Make sure that your pages are understandable

Once your website is created, please make sure that it is understandable by search engines.  An SEO guide suggests that ChatGPT can partly lean on Bing’s search index, but OpenAI has not confirmed such a clAIm.

Another source suggests that submitting to Bing Webmaster Tools can be a power move since it will determine how Bing discovers and indexes your pages. Please make sure that all your content is avAIlable in readable HTML.  Now, if your website information is only accessible when the JavaScript runs, then it could be an issue; the best way to counter it is to use server-side rendering and include the mAIn content in HTML so that it has accessibility to crawlers. These steps will ensure that your content is easy to discover, but they cannot guarantee citations.

Step 3: Answer it right away

Please make sure that you answer your topic right away. Then you can provide explanations, insights, and original data. One source claims that writing a 40- 60-word paragraph after your H2 can be a wise decision.  This clearly shows the search engine what the H2 is about.

Another catch is using information that is up to date with the current world; if you are writing an article on “ best SEO tools in 2026,” then please make sure that you use 2026 insights rather than relying on old information. For commercial purposes, keep it even more specific; if you are selling software, then make sure that you clearly discuss the pricing structure and have a dedicated contact us button.  A vendor study reported that websites that discuss their pricing structure clearly are likely to appear at the top of AI search results.

Step 4: Brand consistency is key

One study reported that websites that maintain the same name and consistency across all their channels have a higher chance of visibility in AI search engines. This is not a universal rule, but it shows you that maintaining a proper brand presence across the web can get you noticed.  Another thing you could do is use digital PR; that means you can use guest articles, appear in podcasts, provide LinkedIn insights, and answer journalists and reporters to get a backlink to your website. If your post and content are really meaningful, then that would be link-worthy automatically. In the case of ChatGPT, the cross-level authority is much higher than page-level alone

Step 5: Traditional SEO matters but not ultimate authority

Ranking one on Google doesn’t mean that you would be cited in AI. One study suggested that only 10 % of citations come from Google’s first-page rankings, while another report suggested that 12 % is the actual citation number. Thus, from these findings, it can be said that traditional SEO matters and it’s helpful to crawl and discover your website, but that does not mean it will appear in AI citations as well.

You would need clear structure and value-driven content that would automatically earn links without chasing backlinks. A small website with little or no backlinks can appear in AI citations since the website has written content that genuinely solves the user’s query

Step 6: Let go of Schema obsession

The word of mouth about using Schema markup to increase website visibility is strong, but that does not mean it’s true. The evidence of Schema markup is extremely limited. A study researched this claim on its own and found that there are no meaningful citations, even after 1,885 JSON-LD structured data and 4k controlled pages. This evidence proves that schema markup is not enough to boost visibility. So it’s advised that you treat Schema markup as one of your technical SEO strategies rather than the ultimate authority

Monitoring your steps

Once you know the steps, the next step is to monitor and check. The first thing you should do is directly ask ChatGPT questions in search-enabled mode and write something that customers would directly ask. Second, monitor website traffic in Google Analytics (GA4) and closely look at visits that come from chatgpt.com. This tells you if ChatGPT is sending visitors to your website. Now go for AI monitoring tools like brand mentions and citations across multiple channels. Be patient while monitoring; it can take months for you to get cited in AI Overview. So test over time rather than treating this as a one-time strategy

In closure

In short, getting cited in ChatGPT comes down to three things: allowing content access to your website, creating link-worthy content treated as a resource page, and building your brand presence across all channels.  Please note that you need to fix the technical layer first, since no amount of great content can be discovered if the AOI search bot is blocked.
