An AI humanizer is a tool that is being touted to have capabilities of helping AI-generated text read more like human-written so they can evade detection.
In this FastLinky blog post, I’ll discuss what this tool is, how it works, the practical and ethical issues that may arise out of its use and whether it is actually useful or a waste of time.
Let’s roll.
What is an AI Humanizer?
As the name suggests, An AI humanizer is a software that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to modify an AI-generated text so it sounds more like human-written.
The idea is to use AI to trick AI.
You will generate a text using an AI text generator, and pass the AI-generated copy through an AI humanizer and you will get a copy that can bypass AI detection, at least that’s what the developers claim.
The quintessence of this claim is, here is a tool that has the creative, imaginative and emotional powers of a talented and efficient human being.
Really?
How Does an AI Humanizer Work?

AI humanizers are powered by complex AI models and algorithms to produce human-like content.
There is a thing called an AI detector. This tool tells whether a text was written by a man or a machine, ie. if it is AI-generated.
This tool also uses complicated AI technologies and is pretty good at what it does.
I’ve tested some of these AI detectors to ascertain their level of efficiency and they have proved themselves in most cases.
But an AI humanizer is supposed to be so good that even these AI detectors cannot catch the AI-generated texts it produces.
Now let’s see what technology these tools use to produce so-called human-like texts.
Machine Learning (ML)
Machine learning is a type of AI that helps machines learn and improve their performances from data without elaborate coding by human beings.
ML utilises special algorithms to analyse huge amounts of data, understand patterns and make decisions based on the analysis.
Transformer
A transformer is an artificial neural network that helps an AI tool understand context and produce coherent outcomes from a given input.
Deep Learning Model
This is a type of machine learning that provides computers with artificial neural networks so they can mimic human thought processes.
Natural Language Processing (NLP)
NLP language model is a sub-field of AI that enables machines to understand, interpret and mimic human language.
AI humanizers utilise advanced NLP models powered by AI.
The Processes of Humanizing
Training on Huge Data
AI humanizers are trained on huge text samples, or data, called training data, collected from diversified sources like books, articles, newspaper stories, coding languages etc.
The efficiency of these tools depends on the quantity and quality of this training data because when they process an input and create text based on it, they always refer to this training data.
Understanding Sequential Coherence
While creating texts, an AI humanizer uses its training data and AI algorithms and models to understand the sequence of words and sentences and produce coherent and contextually appropriate output.
Predicting the Next Word
While creating texts, this AI-powered tool utilises transformer-based NLP models, ML, DL and other techniques to predict which word may come after a word.
The neural network systems help it to think like a human being and understand words, grammar, meaning and context to produce coherent logical text documents.
Statistical Possibilities
While creating texts, AI humanizers, at each stage, use statistical analysis to identify the probable words based on the context and sequence.
They select words that statistically align with the intent, context and sequence of the prompt to predict contextually correct and suitable words.
Using ML, NLP, DL, statistical probabilities and AI algorithms, the humanizer produces documents that mimic the writing by a human being, according to its developers.
How an AI Humanizer works
Leveraging AI algorithms, ML, DL and and advanced NLP models, especially transformer-based architectures, an AI humanizer first analyses an input or prompt to understand its meaning, intention, context.
It then produces texts that resonate with the intent of the prompt.
The following is the sequential processes an AI humanizer uses while creating human-like texts:
- After you give it a prompt or input, the tool then utilises its ‘intelligence’ to understand the meaning and intent of the input.
- It then decides the ideal tone, emotion, length and diction for the output text.
- Then using the artificial neural network, it starts combing its dataset to find appropriate words and sentence structures and starts writing.
- At every step, he analyzes a word and its contextual importance based on the previous words and sentences and predicts the next appropriate words.
- Thus the entire text is written word-by-word.
Does It Do What It Promises to?
AI humanizers promise to help AI-generated texts to deceive AI text detectors. This means they are nothing but AI text generators themselves, maybe with better and more training data and more advanced AI technologies.
I’ve tested four popular and free AI humanizers—Ahrefs, Surfer SEO, Humanize AI, AIhumanize.io to ascertain their efficiency.
I’ve used four popular AI text detectors in the test namely, ZeroGPT, QuillBot, Scribbr and Copyleaks.
I followed a simple methodology.
First, I generated a copy using ChatGPT.
Then I checked it using the four AI detectors and noted down the results.
After that, I used the AI generated copy as the prompt and got it ‘humanized’ by the four AI humanizers.
Then, I checked the copies produced by four humanizers using the four AI detectors and noted down the results.
Finally, I compared the two sets of results: the test results of the raw ChatGPT copy on the AI detectors and the results of ‘humanized’ versions of it on the AI detectors.
The Results and the Verdict
The Results
Not a single AI humanizer of these four could evade the AI detectors and produce copies with less than 59% to 80% AI-generated texts.
Ahrefs and Humanize AI did slightly better than Surfer SEO and AIhumanize.io but nothing to shout about.
The Verdict
AI humanizers will have miles to go before they can even be considered for your content needs. My personal opinion is they are nothing better than any AI text generator freely available online.
Limitations of AI Humanizers

Not doing what it should do isn’t the only bad thing about an AI humanizer: It has a long list of other potential demerits. Here are some of them.
They Lack Creativity
AI humanizers lack creative, imaginative and emotional powers that give a write-up life and vibrancy.
This lack means they cannot come up with original ideas or imagine what is not in the training data.
They Produce Boring Copies
It’s a machine and lacks human emotions and talent. It has some set rules it must abide by. It cannot break rules which is the hallmark of great writers.
As a result they produce mechanical boring copies–replete with commonplace words, hackneyed sentence constructions and cliched expressions.
They Produce Erroneous Copies
An AI humanizer often produces copies containing incorrect information and biased statements. This may invite trouble if you aren’t careful.
They Entirely Depend on Training Data
AI humanizers entirely depend on their training and example datasets. Their performance completely depends on the quality and quantity of data they have been fed with.
They Cannot Think Critically
It cannot think critically and as a result cannot infuse satire, humour or other emotions into their output that make a write-up lively and attractive.
They Encourage Thieves
No responsible and efficient writer will ever use AI tools that help one steal others properties, reshape it using a tool and pass it off as his own.
And this AI humanizer is such a tool. Only immoral, worthless, inefficient and talentless people will use it.
A man who can write will always prefer his talent, experience and writing prowesses to a machine, no matter how ‘intelligent’ it is.
They Encourage Laziness
There are, unfortunately, no shortcuts to success.
If you use an AI text generator, even if it can produce stuff as efficiently as you, you will deprive your brains of the exercises it needs to better themselves.
Over time, dependence on machines will make you a lazy, worthless content thief–worthy only of contempt.
They are Totally Unethical
Using an AI humanizer to transform someone else’s writing and palm if off as your own, is an out and out unethical, immoral and punishable offence.
If you want to rephrase your own copy for some reason, its use may be justified, but in all other cases, it is totally against all ethical norms and practices regarding writing.
They May Trigger Unemployment Pandemic
Irresponsible companies, only interested in cutting costs, may start using these AI tools to get the job done and cut down the overheads.
In this case, lots of efficient people will lose their jobs they need and deserve.
From both ethical and economic standpoints, this wholesale unemployment is dangerous for a nation.
Complicated Legal Issues

Apart from the abovementioned side effects, AI humanizers may generate almost unsolvable legal dilemmas related to the following areas.
Ownership
Who is the rightful owner of the copyright to AI-generated Text: the creator of AI technology, the trainer of AI tools or the guy who uses such a tool?
Liability
Who is liable if a content generated by an AI humanizer is found guilty of copyright infringement?
Attribution
Who should get the credit for an AI-generated text? The developer of AI technology or the guy who put the training data into the tool?
Conclusion
An AI humanizer is an AI-powered tool that writes copies supposedly like a human being. But a simple test will prove to anyone that this claim is completely vacuous.
Any freely-available AI detection tool can easily identify a text created by this software as machine-generated.
Apart from this worthlessness, AI humanizers can encourage immoral and unethical practices of stealing other people’s intellectual properties and palm them off as one’s own.
Besides, this tool also has the potential to render hundreds of people jobless and create complicated legal proceedings.
